, Shah Jahan was the richest man in the world. No one really knew Shah Jahan even during his time. There was a ‘cold hauteur about him that did not permit intimacy’.  He was soft spoken and unfailingly polite always correct and formal in speech and manner. Everything from his demeanor to his dress and jewels and setting, were carefully curated to project grandeur and magnificence. For this very reason he abstained from alcohol, lest he ‘rupture the taut membrane of self-control encasing him’. Khurram, Shah Jahan’s real name till he was anointed as the emperor, was completely devoted to his queen Mumtaz Mahal, so much so that in his devotion to her, he even neglected his other wives. ‘The intimacy, deep affection, attention and favour which his majesty had for the Lady, he did not have for any other. Mumtaz Mahal was his intimate companion, colleague and close confidante in distress and comfort, joy and grief…’ Shah Jahan was dependent on his queen just as Jahangir was with his queen Nur Jahan. But unlike Jahangir who did not care for convention and was not bothered about who knew of his dependence, Shah Jahan, on the other hand, was careful about his appearances.
